CCA 3 Cafes Classic, Friday 22 March 2019

image

Hi all

CCA’'s first Classic of 2019... The 3 Cafes ride.

All welcome - CCA members or not. If you fancy it, please ensure you are self-sufficient in terms of food, drink, cash and navigation: in case you need to find an alternative way back.

Friday 22nd March, 8.30am, Rhubarb & Mustard, Ashwell.

The route is as per last year;

http://www.plotaroute.com/route/24003

The Full English route is 118 miles mostly in Sufferfolk. The pace is the same as the Wells 123 Classic, all-inclusive club run styley. 15-17mph average. It’'ll be a full day and note sunset is around 6pm on that day. So bring lights. This distance, early on the year, with the chance of bad weather, are just the sort of conditions the pro riders take on every Spring. Partly with that in mind - and to be inclusive to all members, there’'s an alternative version;

The Continental route ticks off two of the cafes and is approx 60 miles total to Bury St Edmunds station, for a relaxing train ride back to Ashwell via Cambridge station.

The roads and lanes are a bit tighter in Suffolk at times. It requires a little more single file here and there. Treat it as an opportunity to prove your group riding skills. And there is a small section [2.5 miles] of A-road around Highpoint Prison. Later, Saffron can be a bit heavy in traffic by the time we get there, so we’'ll play it cool and practice commuting skills. As ever, we will do whatever we need to do to stay safe.

Cafe 1
The Blue Egg
35 miles
A bike ride magnet. Top quality food. Super slick, quick service.

Cafe 2
Maglia Rosso
62 miles
A reet proper destination to mark out the furthest point of the ride and mecca for cycling cafe hunters, complete with converted pub garden into a cyclo-cross track. http://www.magliarosso.co.uk/the-cafe/

Cafe 3
Bicicletta
93 miles
Saffron Walden’'s trendy cycling cafe.

I’ will pre-order lunch at Maglia Rosso. I will ask for your choices closer to the day.

  • Hi all

    It's really cold right now, but there's hope! It's only about 7 weeks to the CCA Spring Classic. The 3 Cafes ride. So bringing this note to the top. I will post a Maglia Rosso menu later at some point and take people's lunch order.

    thanks

    Martin

    PS. There'll be a new mid-summer Classic this year. Another scenic ride into Suffolk and back. Different route to the 3 Cafes ride. And it will be on a weekend day which I know many people would like. More details soon there.

    That's 10......Getting nearer the Dirty Dozen (cue graphic Martin)
  • That's right Paul. Until then, we have to make do with this:

    'Only the strongest will survive'. Not quite true. With 10 of us, the less confident will be able to safely draft in the group and save 30% in effort or so.

    Riders.... remember to jot down your Maglia lunch choice HERE.

    Martin, I am considering this as its my day off. What time do you normally get back?
  • Hi Chris - it would be good to have your power in the peloton. It's a full-day. Expect to get to Ashwell around 6pm.

    The light is always fading by the time we get back. Bring lights, just in case.
