17th July Evening Club TT - Results and Handicap Standings; NOW UPDATED WITH REPORT
Tonight's race was all about Youth and Experience. Youth in the sense that we were visited by a group of ex-CCA youth who cut their teeth and were first coached under CCA colours at the grass track and moved on to ride with Welwyn in the Junior ranks. And Experience of our own CCA riders. This was good preparation for the youth as I understand they will be on tour in Belgium (or was it The Netherlands?) shortly, including a time-trial stage. All acquitted themselves very impressively, we were pleased to see them again and wish them well on their trip.
But the real interest amongst the CCA riders is increasingly the Handicap and some of the season-long competitions, with a number of competitors now having ridden the qualifying 4 times for the fastest Mens, Junior and Veteran (off standard) competitions (no qualifying Ladies yet?). I will update you on the state of play in these competitions in the coming weeks.
However, thoughts probably also strayed to the speed of the full length of the newly chipped road surface between the Toll Bar foot-down turn and the Stables as many of the times were 30 seconds or so off PBs, though it could have been the slightly cooler, greyer skies, the odd spot of rain or an unusual Southerly light breeze. But none of these conditions seemed to affect the performance of our Handicap winner, Mr. McLeish, who put in an absolutely rampaging ride that lopped an enormous 43 seconds off his previous PB, the only new PB on the night. Mr. Askew, who was second fastest on the night, maintained his increasingly impressively consistent scoring in the Handicap competition stretching further ahead of a desperately unlucky Mr. Orriss - who remains in second - but was badly held up on Damnation Alley (twice) by a farm tractor. However, I understand that Mr. Orriss takes possession of a new steed next week and so we look forward to him bouncing back from this disappointment as soon as possible.
Mr. Lawless again showed a clean pair of heels to the field as a whole and also the other competing Veteran's off standard. Master Ayers was fastest CCA Junior, with Welwyn's Master Storti fastest Junior overall.
I am indebted to Mr. Ayers (Sr), Flamme Rouge's Mr. Quiggin (Sr) and Mr. Doncaster and Mr. Hadsley for helping out.
Come out and cheer your Team on this Sunday at the Inter Club 25 held on substantially the same course and Head Quartered at the Guilden Morden Village Hall. What's that you say? First rider off is at 09.01. Tea and cake will be available at the Hall. But of course you'll be there! No? :-)
