edited July 2019 in Time Trial
With this event organised by CCA, this was a bit of a blur for your correspondent. Firstly the Big Thanks from the day:

Your Helpers were:

S. Orriss - Marshal at Wendy/A1198 turn

J. Davis - Pusher
G. Wood - Marshal at New Road turn
All received high praise and worked together as a fantastic unit.

I'd also like to thank Mr. Askew for assisting with putting the signs out the night before and Mr. McKenzie/All with moral support throughout.

Your 14-strong Race Team were (in alphabetical order):
G. Askew
R. Bumstead
T. Chitu
MC
E. Koppe

After rain and blustery wind on the Saturday, race day dawned bright and still, but with a South-Westerly wind stirring. The only additional hazard noted on the course for the early starters was an unfortunate muntjac deer who had met its end on the rise past Tadlow. If you don't already know the F14/25 course, it's based on the Club 10 but with the start up near the Wrestlingworth cross roads and the riders adding a short extension at the far end of the course continuing through Wendy to the A1198 to turn left and then left again at the Wimpole roundabout before passing the Toll Bar turn. Riders do two circuits.

As the competitors began to arrive from 8.00 a.m. the sense of anticipation was rising - as was the pile of cakes donated to the kitchen by the CCA Team and Helpers! There would be 67 starters out, with 54 Men and 13 Ladies. Bedford RCC put out a strong team with Simon Norman - last year's winner by 3 minutes - returning to lead the assault. But our terrific unit were on home turf and defended impressively. Conditions were tough, mainly the rising heat on this sunny day and that South Westerly, that became a head-wind on the slightly up hill back straight. There were some tough breaks, two quite literally, with Mr. McLeish breaking a tri-bar with his efforts and Mr. Bumstead an arm-rest falling off leading to an uncomfortable ride, particularly through the 2.5 mile newly surface chipped surface on the B1042.

But when the dust settled, every one had scored handsomely or put in a great ride to snatch points off the other teams. BRCC impressively won both the Mens' and Ladies' individual placing 4 in the top 10 of the Mens', with Mr. Norman taking two miniutes out of the second placed rider with a 53:44. But CCA also had 4 in that bracket all beating the hour on this, a sporting course with Mr. Potter 3rd, Mr. Young making a wonderful first entry into this competition in 5th, the ever reliable Mr. Stuart in 7th and Mr. Ronayne in 9th sharpening up for his assault on Ride London. And Ms. Koppe was second in the Ladies competition, overcoming a number of those who had beaten her in the IC30. Having ridden all three events thus far, Ms. Koppe has contributed no less than 13% of CCA's total points hawl (more on that later).

Mr. Lawless just missed out on the hour but was still an impressive 14th in the Mens' having raced grass track the previous day, Mr. Swan made a welcome return in 18th and Mr. Askew rounded out the top 20 and was the last of - if you like - the "positive" scoring CCA riders. However, Mr. Bumstead, MC, Dr. Chitu, Mr. McKenzie, Mr. McLeish and Mr. Miles were just as valuable to the CCA cause as they impressively posted times clustered in the upper half of the finishers, thus taking points off the other Clubs finishers.

On the day, CCA was second, just 8 points behind the winning team on the day, BRCC. So while we could be disappointed not to have continued our winning streak from the first two events of the season, we can be rightly proud that we defended our lead in the competition after three events. Well Done Team!

Thoughts now turn to the fourth event of the 2019 series, the IC10 organised by IRC to be held on Saturday 3rd August. See the separate post on that elsewhere in the Forum.
