28th August Evening Club 5.74 TT - Report, announcing Season-long Competition Winners
Yes, you saw that correctly!
Despite all the best laid plans: nibbles and cold beers, check; Forum notice on early start time, check; helpers and organisers all primed, check, a last minute hiccup forced a quick rethink. On the morning of this our final race of the season, the Cambridgeshire Council website showed roadworks with possible traffic lights on a stretch of the B1042 Lower Road return leg of our course just after the turn to Croydon. Alarmed, your correspondent drove out to the course from Royston over lunch and sure enough there were the barriers, diggers - and the dreaded two-way lights. The workmen confirmed that the lights would remain in place over night. Bah! So what to do? Cancel?
What transpired was a hastily rearranged course of approximately 6 miles from the start of the 25 mile course to a point along Damnation Alley short enough of the Toll Bar to allow contestants to slow up safely. Not what we really wanted as our season-long competitions were nicely simmering, but in the circumstances the results of the competitions had to be frozen as of last week's results. But rather than miss out the chance of a soiree over announcements of the final competition results, all threw themselves into the shortened, wind-assisted course with great aplomb. Thanks All for your good humour; glad we were able to put on a show! :-)
As it happens, most Garmins measured the route at about 5.74 miles. Could become a fixture? Probably not! The effort of putting down the power over the shorter course wasn't to everyone's taste :-) However, for interest, here are the results (all CCA unless otherwise indicated). Note the particularly eye-catching performance from Mrs. Field :-)
In case anyone gets withdrawal symptoms from testing before next year's Hard Riders, the Inter Club Hill Climb is probably now going to take place on 29th September; and the CCA Hill Climb Championship is on 20th October.
Good Luck to Mr. Potter at the National 10 TT this weekend! Looks in good form, no?

1. C. Potter 11.55Over convivial drinks and banter back at the Guilden Morden Village Hall HQ, the following were announced as Season-long competition winners. Congratulations to them All (full details of winning average times to follow shortly).

14. T. Ayers (J) 15.15
Fastest Lady - Mrs. J. FieldPerhaps the most eagerly awaited result was the Handicap. The story of this year's event can best be summarised thus. There were 15 races in total. Mr. Marriage stormed to an early lead doggedly followed by Mr. Orriss. However, our eventual winner, Mr. Askew, began putting together an impressive and ultimately irrepressible string of results averaging 13 points across his 12 races and two "helps", equating to a third place in each on our Handicap scoring system (21 points for a win on the night, 16 for second place, 13 for third). Dr. Chitu shone brightly in mid-season but ultimately he and Mr. Marriage both ran out of races to make in-roads into Mr. Askew's lead, despite a valiant effort from Mr. Marriage in what became the last three races of the season. As ever, it was fascinating to watch the scoring unfold. Well done to all. For interest, here is the full top 10 in the Handicap scoring calculated by the spreadsheet, including the number of races raced before the slash "/" and the number of "helps" after:
Fastest Gentleman - Mr. M. Young
Fastest Junior - Master T. Ayers
Fastest Veteran off Standard - Mrs. J. Field
1 G. Askew 182 (12/2)* indicates score since 10th July 2019 race when joined CCA.
2 D. Marriage 159 (9/2)
3 S. Orriss 140 (12/2)
4 T. Chitu 123 (7/2)
5 T. Allen 94 (8/2)
6 M. Young 93 (8/1)
7 R. Bumstead 85 (14/0)
8 J. Bard 81 (5/0)*
9 D. Doncaster 74 (2/2)
10 A. McLeish 70 (4/1)
In case anyone gets withdrawal symptoms from testing before next year's Hard Riders, the Inter Club Hill Climb is probably now going to take place on 29th September; and the CCA Hill Climb Championship is on 20th October.

Good luck Chris at the nationals.
Bad dad.
See you all at awards night if not sooner.
Thanks to everybody involved in the TTs this year, been a great season. And of course a massive thanks to Andy for his fantastic event organizing/running and inter-club troop mustering. Oh and also the strangely Dickensian write ups - Chapeau to you sir
Loved reading the write ups and superb DSing in the Inter Clubs.
