Arkesden Hill Climb Championship, Sun 3rd Nov 8.30am

A note below about this new closed-road event that's nearby and sounds like a good variation to a typical Sunday ride. Info supplied by Mark Fraser.

Hi All

It's finally arrived: the first closed road hill climb event in North West Essex...who would have believed it! After months of protracted negotiations with UDC and the UCI we have the go ahead. The monstrous Col du Long Lane is the venue, its slopes littered with the tattered dreams of many Saffron Walden cyclists.

Places in the event are limited so don't delay in registering at:

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-arkesden-hill-climb-championship-registration-74882374197?aff=ebdssbdestsearch

The road will be closed from 8.00-11.00am on Sunday 3rd November. Registration will take place in Arkesden Village Hall from 7.30am that morning.

The first rider will set-off at 8.30 with subsequent riders going off at 30 second intervals. It is a simple race of truth, man/woman vs mountain, somewhere around three minutes of unadulterated pain, suffering, anguish and torment. As the road rises to over 10% in the final 150m the cacophony of noise from the massed spectators will surely spur you on over the finishing line.

But once is not enough, we want you to get your money’s worth: after the time trial has been completed every competitor will then also have a head-to-head race on the same climb against another rider. We’ll draw up and handicap these races to make sure everyone has a fair chance of winning. And if you have set one of the fastest four times you’ll be racing for medals and for the title of King or Queen of the Hill.

Sign up, tell your cycling mates, and bring along family and friends to cheer you on. Let's make some noise! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1aTTokSKko

The event is open to anyone 12 years and older on the day...don't be shy!

A compulsory cash donation of £5 per competitor, to cover the event costs, will be collected at registration on the morning.

All the best

There will be a few special categories too including a "Clydesdale" category: the rider plus bike must be OVER 15 stone / 95.5 kg to qualify. There will be a weigh-in on the day to check that those claiming to be Clydesdales are indeed true Clydesdales. :)

Anyone struggling to reach sufficient overall weight required for Clydesdale classification is welcome to borrow my winter bike...

  • We’ve reached 100 entries so have closed the books. I’ve counted five or six CCA senior riders and three CCA youth riders among the entrants.

I filmed the course today so this video gives those riders a taste of the climb: Hill of Dreams

So now you’ve got a couple of weeks to practice the climb! :)
  • I've changed my mind!!

Bit of a kick at the end..
  • We’ve got a full field, 100 cowbells, a fancy burger/coffee van, and some great prizes (as well as some slightly tongue-in-cheek prizes too...)

And Martin and Emma are both featured in my “Local Heroes” previews :)
