THE BEAVER : half ironman triathlon

edited May 2010 in Road Racing
The season has officially started now. Tough course at Belvoir Castle, Nottinghamshire. After a 36 minute 1,900m swim and what seemed like a half mile run into transition, I took to the yellow TT machine with the tri-spoke front wheel and disc on the back. The high winds and rain made it pretty hairy doing nearly 40mph downhills around blind corners on gravel. Turning corners, hitting the wind and coming down from 26mph on the flat to 16mph made me feel deflated. Three laps of 17m. Glad to get off eventually after covering over 50m at 20mph average without a tumble or a puncture (or hyperthermia wearing only a trisuit without gloves, glasses or arms warmers - to save a few seconds eh!). The run must have been longer than a half marathon... up to the castle and over the lake and up the other hill three times and back. First lap the slowest, last lap the best.

Finished 12 minutes faster than last year in 5 hours and 17 minutes in total, which doing a quick calculation could be enough for next year worlds qualification pool and 14th in my category on the day. Top ten would have been nice but some handy warriors from afar had done their business better than me. Now onto Bala in Wales to try and break 5 hours on 13th June. We'll have to see. Swimming good. Bike good. Run to strengthen.
