numbers nearly there club. Come on everyone. This is the first time in 10 years I have seen the race organizer have such a struggle to get help. We have 170 or so adult members and nearly 80 youth in this club. If we can't get some 30 or so to help make the most important early season starting race off the ground it is a poor show.
I'm sure it will go ahead and I know from experience of past races that everyone taking part in whatever category will get loads of fun out of the event......Go CCA
Geoff, My thoughts exactly but also you have to remember that those 170 or so members aren't all active and some are just happy to go for a bimble on a club run now and then. Oh and a minority bugger off and move to North Yorks/Pennine Border! :-)
We've lost one of the accredited marshals, so we need another flag marshal. Only 3 more left to fill the list up! Almost there! Does anybody see Bob S in the village much these days? I keep missing the Wednesday run and he's usually the chief marshal, I was wondering if he would fancy doing that again this year...

I have various road signs & chequered flag that were used for the recent club hardriders 25 TT. Do you need these for this race & if so when will they be put out? I can be available anytime Sunday, but if you need them before hand I can deliver/help set out on Saturday but only in the afternoon.
A HUGE THANKYOU to all who have signed their Sunday morning away. If you're down to marshal, wrap up warm and bring a flask (hip flask if you're still up from Saturday night). If for any reason you can't make it, just let me know ASAP and I will try and find somebody else to cover the role.

Does anybody have access to some traffic cones that I can put out on the high street to stop riders parking there? I've requested that nobody parks there but am aware that people will ignore that... If I stick some cones out before the race and then collect them up after the race starts then that should keep the situation a bit happier with the locals...
Will - we have another 4 or 6 stakes left to use up for additional signs. If you need any more signs making up let me know and I will see if I can hook up with Martin over the weekend to sort it.
We'll need a 3 or so for the HQ so nobody parks where the race convoy need to be... Then maybe 10 or so to put out further down the high street? There are 4 races on this circuit this year so we're trying to keep the locals happy!
I'm baking! I'll do carrot cake and brownies, one tray of each. I'll also do some fruity flapjack (some gluten free, let me know if anyone wants a GF piece put aside). That's assuming nothing gets burnt or eaten on the way...

I'll be buttering some rolls during the race with Jaymi and Neil Murphy (when he gets there after his night shift) and the family MacKenzie if I have time and making sure that all the cakes are edible too. It'd be rude not to.
I'll also be bringing a couple of cakes, I think some cupcakes and "lemon and thyme loaf" which I'm told is technically a cake.
So as a recap:
Phil, Martin and JMac, if you could get to the HQ for 7.45 I'll issue you with a load of signs, some cable ties and a hammer or two (feel free to bring any extra sign walloping equipment) along with a couple of maps of where to put which signs.
Marshals: If you could get to the HQ around 8am and bring any High Viz gear you might want to stick on, we have some vests but possibly not enough to go around for everyone. Weather's looking bright but chilly so wrap up warm as you'll be stood around for a couple of hours at least. Lots of vigorous flag waving should warm you up whenever the race comes by.
Sign on is from 7.45 till 8.30. I'll be there early to open up the hall and get the urn on. If anybody wants to get there early and help with refreshments 7.30 would be great, generally people will just want tea and coffee before the race, no food, so the prep of that can wait to be done whilst the race is on.
All drivers and first aider should be there for 8 to get the cars set up with headboards and lights, Shelton if you could generally stand in the corner of the hall shouting "spare wheels here" before disappearing to make a killing on eBay that would be great. I'll tell anybody that brings spares before you get there to leave them by the door so there's not far to lug them. There will be space to park outside the village hall for the race convoy that I will cone off so the cars are all in the same place at the beginning of the race, just move the cones and park up.
Hopefully the race will be over by 11.30 and everything out of the HQ by 1. I've got to scoot off to a gig straight after so I'm hoping this will be the case!

Very difficult to get a sense of what is going on stuck on a junction.
Got some info from Travis whose brake fell off after a tussle with a hedge. Some snippets on the radio. Our 2 CCA's off the back. A huge crash and the leader being DQ'd? Whats the story behind all this?
Not much to report from the junction but there are certainly some crabby impatient car drivers out there.

A great shot there by Felix of the commanding winner - Tom Trimble. Not sure the circumstances of how you got away but you were out off the front for 1h40'. Two got back onto your wheel but I understand you were clear again by the line. I could tell it hurt because when I was chatting to Tom at the end he couldn't swing his leg over to get back onto his bike.
The rest of the pack stayed together, shelling out riders in the first few laps. There was a big crash in the closing lap just outside Orwell; in racing terms this split the pack. Medically it broke one collarbone, but most people seemed to be walking or riding by the time I got back to the HQ. Certainly Tom (not Trimble) was okay and Bryn was fine. Our pal Josh Maynard managed to avoid going down. Always sad when someone gets hurt in a crash. Thank goodness we had a clam and effective first aider (Lill)
Great job done by Will - thanks mate. Great turn out from CCA marshaling, judging, driving and the cakes looked amazing.
AndyR and I had the pleasant job of marshalling the bends in Little Eversden.
Plenty of friendly locals stopping to ask about the racing.
Really pleased to be part of the event even if it was just waving a red flag.
The club at it's best with a real buzz around the HQ.

We all enjoyed marshalling the A1198 junction and were impressed by the ruthless efficiency of the motorcycle escorts. We followed a big bunch of racers back from the finish to the main road. Next year, please think about continuing the escort of motorbikes and cars for the cyclists back to the HQ. The cyclists were clearly very tired and were wandering about on the road. This could have been a nuisance to unsympathetic drivers, or pose a danger to the cyclists. I mean no criticism of the racers, I'd just like then to stay safe. Thanks for a good morning, we only had one slightly miffed driver who complained that a sign was spoiling the sight line of the junction, but he'd parked in a sight line to tell us about it... Susan
What a brilliant morning! I can't thank you all enough for helping out and making this happen. Expert marshalling from all, I've heard good reports about the flag waving skills of CCA down the grapevine...
An early start for everybody, the Murphy family + extendeds and JMac Junior did a fantastic job of serving up the teas and coffees (buying the milk too, oops) and prepping the rolls and cakes for the riders and marshals return with Neil turning up straight from his night shift to offer moral support from the other side of the counter. I was extremely relieved to see Carmelo wandering in nice and early too. Any questions could be redirected to him so I could concentrate on trying to look like I knew what I was doing whilst running away from everybody who wanted to talk to me.
Thanks to Phil K, Richard L, JMac and Martin for sorting the signs and flags out meaning that all the marshals had to do was get themselves to their points and get back afterwards. Sterling job and hugely important in keeping the race safe.
In these races all the serious stuff is looked after by the commissaires and we were lucky to have an extra comm down to help out by doing a spot of driving too. The regional officers from BC are incredibly helpful and very keen to keep racing on the roads. They provided all the flashing lights and headboards, road signs and marshals flags for the race too. Dick Peake helped out with the moto marshalling, 3 guys who have kept this race safe for a few years now. They do an outstanding job!
As far as the actual race is concerned I'm not 100 percent sure of how it panned out as I was busy eating cakes and rolls back at the HQ. We had a strong rider from Richardsons-Trek sign in on the line and everybody seemed to be paying a lot of attention to him, following him whenever he tried to get off the front and not noticing when Tom snuck off on the 2nd lap. As I understand Tom rode for about an hour and 40 mins on his own, keeping the speed high enough to stay away from the bunch (would that be around 24mph, Tom?), briefly joined by 2 others but rode them off his wheel again to keep going for the win. I would ask him to write a report up but he doesn't really know what happened apart from him having a nice ride on a sunny morning on his own till he won. That's how you win a race properly! Amazing ride by him, and the first homegrown rider to win the Primavera! Outstanding stuff.
The bunch were having a bit of fun on their own by the sounds of it and sadly on the last lap a clash of wheels on the road by Wimpole hall put the riders across the road taking out about 20 guys and leaving a Corley's rider with a broken collarbone. The ambulance was there almost instantly and Lil Swan did an amazing job of patching up the walking wounded as Shelton cleared up the mess and dropped the riders unable to get back to the HQ on their own steam back in Orwell.
Also looking forward to a few snaps from Nat who was seen lurking around with a camera being discreet...
Thanks to Mark, Stevie and Mark for getting the top ten and primes in order (after many a discussion and a few confused moments). The clean up afterwards was done efficiently and with no hassle, meaning we were clear from the HQ at 1pm. Tom even mucked in after the race, giving a hand with the clean up. Good to see (I think it was mainly as his legs wouldn't allow him to sit down yet)!
All in all a good day out. CCA always does itself proud at events like this, being a welcoming and friendly club. It's good to see so many people willing to get involved and keeping this event on the road. Next year we may be even closer to home depending on the approval of accredited marshals by Hertfordshire which may mean we can run a race circuit just out of Ashwell and even possibly put on a little stage race.
