  • Off soon to recce next weeks route. 105 hard miles...must be bonkers.
  • well that hurt.Knocked off a couple of loops to make it 84 miles and 9000ft climbing at an average of 12mph. Happy enough at this stage but hoping to average 14mph on this sort of ride by september. Did a nice 95 mile route on Friday with 4500ft climbing at average of 15.5mph.
At this rate reckon I'll be 2 hrs behind the fast guys in Italy. Good job I like scenery !!!!
  • well, that was a wake-up call. saturday's ride was a fast 95 mile rolling route with 4500ft. probably 16mphav. Sunday saw us ride 9500ft of long and hard climbing in 84 miles at 12-13mph av. Today we finished with a rolling 40 miles probably 2500ft at 14mph.
Don't know how I'll feel tomorrow but based on the way I feel now I wouldn't want to do another day.
Still have 7 weeks to improve but this tells me that going too fast too early will cook my chances of completing this tour.
Whatever anyone else is planning I'm spinning easy for the first 2 days.
If you want a severe test before going come up here in August.
I'm sure most of you will be just fine but it's always helpful to see where your training is.
  • for interests sake in case anyone is..........
I could have managed a ride but it wouldn't have been a tough mountainous day. I am recovered now but it took a couple of days to feel strong again. Weather is good this Sunday so will try another block then. Hoe your training is progressing well. Maybe see some of you up here in August.
  • so, for those coming August 26th to 28th 3 full days
    here are the routes.
Day 1 to reproduce the climbing in Italy. Stang, Marsk and one mother of a steady 6% up to Folly Top

Day 2 probably some of the hardest climbing you can get in 80 miles....ask M.C.

Day 3 a glorious rolling ride to the best cafe in the NE. We can do this any speed you like but I'm guessing it will be a spin the legs day.
hope some of you can make it

    missed 2 digits off end...
  • Geoff, just seen your ride start point and realised that we were not far from you. Thought you were further north than that. Would have loved to have paid you a visit. We were in Bainbridge, near Askrig for a few days.
Have a fabulous weekend riding. I drank most of the rain earlier in the week.
  • cheers Vincent. Favourite route via Askrig. Doing that tomorrow plus low row via the stang. Drop in next trip. Always welcome.
  • well, what a weeks cycling.
Great riding with the Pells and Archie earlier. We managed 3 days riding in average weather. Then this glorious weekend for the brutal rides pre Italy.
Good to have Jeremy and Mike from Cumbria for Saturday and Sundays ride. Mark and I completed the 3 days with a tidy 50 miles.
Total mileage for me over 6 days was 400 and 24000 ft climbing.
Weight down to target of 11st 70kg.
Feel like I've been hammered but think I will hang in there now
I'll leave MC to give his perspective. Good to help him celebrate his birthday yesterday.
  • Thank you so much Geoff - Archie absolutely loved it, many smiles along the way too I gather!!! (Thank you also to the Pells x)
  • Well the weather has been rough since last weekend Mark sowe were lucky. I've just about ironed out all the stiff muscles and finally feel like another ride. Maybe a long easy run tomorrow. Hope you enjoy tour of cornfields.
  • Weather has been kind in parts and since Italy I have managed to fit in three good rides which have put my form to the test. 95 miles to North Yorks2 weeks after Italy, a 40 miler the following week and a hilly route taking in Stang, Grinton, Aysgarth, Wharfdale, Fleet Moss, Buttertubs,Tan Hill. Feeling good so I'll try and take the form as long as possible.
Hope to see a few of you up here in 2020.
  • Good ride out to Osmotherly with Jeremy on Tuesday. 96 miles average 15mph 4500ft climbing so happy with that. Not sure how many more such rides will be possible with colder weather and losing daylight. Hopefully will still be opportunities.
  • it is a great little place Mark. Have fun. Some really good climbs within reach of there. Jeremy and I were thinking of driving over to Rounton parking up and then riding some serious climbs...maybe meet up. I know Dave and Jenny have family close so maybe team up sometime.
  • did a great little ride yesterday in sunny weather.
    route for anyone interested

  • not much cycling here at present. Weather kinder today but it has been quite inclement these past weeks. I'll get a few short ones in over the winter period but am starting seriously in March when I have 2 weeks in Almeria cycling the mountains of Andalucia.
