Riding Manchester Velodrome, Sun 2nd June 6-8pm

edited December 2012 in General
If we have sufficient interest we can book a club session at Manchester velodrome, and have a go at riding the track.

I was lucky enough to get a place thanks to Geoff at a session last Saturday night and it was awesome. The session lasts 4 hours and is suitable for anyone from complete beginners at track riding upwards. It is very efficient. If you hire a bike it is waiting for you with your name on, and you can hire shoes with the right cleats for 4 quid. You are coached all the time, and go out in groups. I got out on the track 5 times during the 4 hours, and quickly progressed from a nervous start to practising team pursuit changes, riding behind the derney, and generally having a lot of funny. the feeling as you come off the banking at speed is quite remarkable. Just being on the same track where Boardman broke the hour record twice and Cav and Brad won the Madison world champs is amazing in itself. There are signed photos all over the place of gold medalists.

At this stage all we need to know is if people are interested. If so we can look at booking a session. Obviously in the future when it reopens hopefully we can book sessions at London too, but maybe a big waiting list for clubs to start with I guess.
Who's up for it?

I would be, as would both Katie and Edward who have been before.
    Alistair
  • Holly and me would both be up for it
  • I would be up for this...
  • Good point Alistair and Andrew- could easily be a combined session for adults and kids (minimum age 10 i think)
  • Yes please. Put me down as a definate.

Any idea of cost to actually go, and the cost to hire a bike?
And when might the session be run?
  • I think bike hire is £16, not sure on the cost of the session, depends on how many attend etc, i think £15-20 ish.
then its just transport - car share and it will be pretty cheap, or advance train tickets are very cheap, via milton keynes.

not sure when it would be, depends on availablity but maybe feb/march??

it was a very good work out, and my legs hurt for days afterwards (in a good way). having done lots of sportives in recent years, i would view this as a really good alternative - different skills, fitness etc, more challenging and interesting, for a comparable cost to most sportives. of course its also a way into track racing, lots of folks race at the track in welwyn friday nights.
  • Thanks, so inc. transport and food it should be about £50-£55 which sounds really reasonable.

    Count me in.
  • Hi Stef, we would be up for it. i.e. me, Karen, Matt (14) and Dan (11)

    Cheers, Peter
  • Any idea when ?
will need some time to get me land legs going

    CP
  • Guessing it will take a while to organise. Feb or March most likely realistically.
  • hi Stef
yes please - i am in, thanks
  • sounds like some interest Stef.
I will look into the next available booking.
Given the difficulty in hiring the track for anything more than 2 hrs we may have a wait. The longest sensible booking available is likely to be 3 hrs. I can assure you all that will be sufficient as it will be solely CCA. Definitely book for adults and youth. We can run both together. 10 is the cut-off age.
    thanks for getting this going.
  • I would definitely up for this having been to Gent.
  • Nice one Stef

Please put my name down as a possible and let's see what day is available.

Depending on what day, I might tie in my newly invented "Ramsbottom-Crackpot" classics ride through Bowland and the Yorkshire Dales the day before to make it a Road n' Track double-header. Or I might just do this separately in the Spring. Everyone welcome whatever.
  • I will keep my good eye on this
post a date and I will let you know straight after
time to try something different !

    CP
  • Definitely interested in this :0)
  • Sounds good and am in (depending on date)
  • I'm definitely interested in this... Any excuse to head up into the peaks for a day or two too.
  • I'm not sure that I'll be very fast, but I'm definately up for it - add me to the list.

    Vic
  • Stef I'm interested, date pending.
  • I've just brought myself a track bike for next seasons racing so I'm definitely be up for this!
  • Would love to try this one, never been on a track, but is on my to do list for 2013! Hopefully date fits in.
  • Put me down as a possible.
  • Hi Stef. I'd be interested to have a go, depending on the date. Many thanks.
  • I very interested in going (subject to dates...)
  • Hi Stef

    Really interested!
  • thanks to all who expressed an interest, great response.
geoff will look into next available date - watch this space!
  • quite agree Stef....brilliant response.....will try and sort it tomorrow (Monday) so watch this space as Stef says.
  • o.k.everyone. Preliminary enquiries at Manchester...no available slots until June as at present. I presume everyone favours a weekend. They are booked solid on every available period till then. I am on the booking waiting list and the June sessions and after haven't yet been finalised.
I am trying to find a way around but don't hope for anything sooner. I will keep you all informed.

I am looking into Newport velodrome , which is the same track with only slight variation favouring sprinters rather than pursuiters. The location is easier and slightly faster, but the setting within a sort of warehouse is nothing as grand as Manchester. We may be able to book a spring session here and then do a Manchester session in June.

Would that meet with approval? over to you guys.
